1984 (the year not the book)

In 1984 your host was twelve years old and like George Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith, he kept a diary, for the citizens of the future. For this special installment of Benjamen Walker’s Theory of Everything we travel back in time and give this diary a soundtrack. TV commercials, radio spots, movie clips – all sound from 1984 (the year, not the book). Find out what totalitarianism really sounds like.

    Your podcast fascinates me.
I would love to see a track listing for the music featured in your 1984 project.

    Future retro.
I love the selections, beautiful and inspiring in one deep breath.

    Keep connecting the dots man.

I am a videomaker and I really enjoyed the show, have been listening to the podcast as well as other stuff from radiotopia – just great. I wonder if you ever got around to making that video about the 1984 show… I have been working with video collages sourced from archival based of various kinds and just thought it was a very good idea to do smthg w this show. If you are interested, please take a look at my stuff at http://www.ricardodaguiar.com – best, r.

I loved this walk down memory lane. I’ve always felt like 1984 was the coolest year in my life. Of course your Michael Jackson, but also Van Halen – Jump, Madonna – Like a Virgin, ZZ Top – Eliminator, AC/DC – Who Made Who (Soundtrack from Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive), just to name a few; were some stellar albums, maybe some of the artists’ best, but were also featured big time on MTV. This was when MTV still only did music. You could call in and vote for your favorite video, on an 800 number so you didn’t get in trouble with Mom and Dad.

What year can produce a comparable list of movies to this??? The Terminator, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, A Nightmare on Elm St., Gremlins, Spinal Tap, Footloose, Sixteen Candles, Beverly Hills Cop, Splash, Red Dawn, Revenge of the Nerds, Purple Rain, The Last Starfighter, Breakin’, Red Dawn

What year can compete with 1984?

    Thanks for the show!
